Where does The Hillbilly African Name come from?
I’ve been operating under the moniker of the Hillbilly African on the internet for the past 8 years. In that time I’ve had several people ask me what it means and even though i’ve addressed it on a podcast episode here and there i’ve never gone into a lot of detail.
When I came up with that name I was mighty proud of myself. The name represents two halves of my heritage. On my father's side : the hillbilly is an homage/reclamation to my overall wearing, DIYer, make/mend/build poor white ancestors who were farmers, hunters, quilters, herbalists, you name it. My grandparents/great parents home literally sat on top of a small hill at the mouth of a creek naked Turkey Creek. If you are from SE Kansas though you probably pronounce it as “Crik” . So yeah, Hillbillies. The African comes from my mother’s side. I was born in Zimbabwe, arguably one of the most gorgeous places on this Earth, and raised in Botswana. Im a very proud southern African.
Thats it. Mix those two and you get me, The Hillbilly African.
